Chai Tea is typically a black tea blended with warming spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, or ginger. These teas are steeped in milk rather than water and usually have honey as a sweetener. However, in the past 10 years or so it has become popular to create Chai Tea with other teas like Rooibos, Green, Pu-Erh, and White teas.
Chai Tea is a traditional drink in India.
The proper way to make a Chai is to bring whole milk to a boil on the stove. Add the tea/spices and honey and simmer for about 15-20 minutes. Strain the tea over your glass and enjoy. Of course other milks can be swapped out for dietary concerns, however, everyone should try a traditional Chai just once. The flavor is unmatchable. Unfortunately, most coffee shops serve boxed Chai Tea, which is far inferior to the real thing. We promise once you try it made in the traditional method, you will become a Chai snob, just like us!
Unique Chai Tea Blends
One of the things Tupelo Honey Teas has become quite known for is our custom blends of Chai Tea. It is funny because when the Tea Lady first started this business, she "hated chai" but really loved this tea her Indian friend would make her. She called it Indian Tea but soon realized that "Indian Tea" and "Chai Tea" were one and the same. Her dislike for Chai was because up until that point, all the Chai Tea she had tasted had come from a box. Fast forward and now Chai ranks as one of her favorites and has put her on the map as a custom tea blender.
Tupelo Honey Teas has a variety of Chai Blends for everyone including ones that can stand alone without milk (for the lactose intolerant) as well as ones that can be used in the tastiest chai lattes with soy, almond, or regular milk!
